Disclaimer
What this site can and cannot claim, and the situations that need a clinician rather than an article.
This page sets out the limits of what Breath Wellness can responsibly claim. It applies to every article, illustration and newsletter we publish.
Not medical advice
The content on this site is general information about breathing, physiology and health. It is not medical advice, it is not a diagnosis, and it is not treatment for any condition. Reading it does not create a clinical relationship with any author or contributor.
Breathing exercises can produce real physiological effects, including dizziness, breathlessness and fainting. Do not begin a practice if you have a condition that makes those effects risky without speaking to a clinician first.
Individual results vary
Where we describe a study or a practice, we are describing a population-level finding, not a prediction about you. Age, fitness, nasal anatomy, anxiety, medication and undiagnosed conditions all change how a breathing practice will feel and what it will do.
Evidence changes
Physiology is not static. Guidance on sleep, hypertension and respiratory rehabilitation is revised periodically, and studies are sometimes contradicted by larger ones. We date every essay and cite our sources so that you can judge how current the argument is.
Emergencies
If you are experiencing severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, or difficulty speaking in full sentences, seek emergency medical help immediately. Do not use this site, or any breathing exercise, in place of emergency care.
Conditions that need clinical guidance
Speak to a qualified clinician before starting any breathing practice if you have or suspect any of the following: asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, obstructive sleep apnoea, uncontrolled high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, a recent cardiac event, epilepsy, a history of fainting, panic disorder, a pneumothorax, recent eye or chest surgery, or if you are pregnant.
Children
Nothing on this site is intended for children. Breath-hold practices in particular should not be taught to children without clinical supervision.
External sources
We link to peer-reviewed papers, clinical guidelines and other publications. We do not control those sources and cannot guarantee that they remain available or unaltered. A link is not an endorsement of everything published by that organisation.
No affiliation
Breath Wellness is editorially independent. We have no commercial relationship with any breathing device manufacturer, supplement brand, clinic or training programme. We do not accept payment for coverage, and we do not publish sponsored content.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Breath Wellness accepts no liability for loss or harm arising from reliance on the content of this site. You are responsible for your own decisions about your health, ideally in consultation with a clinician who knows you.
